- M2 (Heavy Attack): Powerful strike that cannot be blocked. Must be dodged or parried.
- Block: Reduces incoming damage but does NOT block M2 heavies.
- Parry: Press block right before an attack lands. Stuns the attacker for a free punish combo. This is your most important skill.
- Dodge: Double-tap a direction or use Shift. Grants brief invincibility frames. Costs stamina.
- Stamina management: Attacking, dodging, and blocking all use stamina. Watch your bar.
Height, Ethnicity & Hidden Stats
Gakuran has 6 ethnicities: Japanese, African, Middle Eastern, Latin, and Indian. Each has different height ranges. Your height isnt just cosmetic 鈥?it directly affects combat stats. This game works like real life.
- Tall characters (e.g. African): More attack range, more health, bigger hitbox. Perfect for controlling space.
- Short characters (e.g. Indian): More stamina, faster attacks, tighter hitbox. Better for aggressive rushdown.
If picking between mobility and damage 鈥?choose mobility. Your mobility determines how skilled you can play. Japanese is the most common starting ethnicity.
Hidden Stats: Guardfers & Resilience
The game never mentions these, but they are critical:
- Guardfers: Block chip damage. Even when your opponent is blocking, you still deal some damage. Higher guardfers = more chip.
- Resilience: Chance to break out of a grapple. Grapplers trigger when both players land M1 at the same time. Higher resilience = more grapple wins.
These stats depend on your fighting style. Wrestling has the best resilience in the game.
Match Your Height to Your Style
Match your height to your fighting style for maximum effectiveness:
- Short / Medium (under 180cm): Boxing is the best choice. Its heavy attacks have i-frames (unblockable) and perfect blocks reduce heavy cooldown to 1 second. Forces opponents to dodge or die.
- Medium (170-180cm): Versatile. Works with Muay Thai, Karate, and Hakari.
- Tall (over 180cm): Wrestling is the best choice. Heavy attacks grab and slam opponents 鈥?cannot be interrupted. Best resilience in the game. Pure dominance in close range.
Check the official Gakuran Trello for detailed perk descriptions of every style.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Forgetting to press T 鈥?Always enter fighting stance before combat. Without it, attacks wont work.
- Spamming M1 鈥?Mix your attacks. The M1 combo ends with a knockback kick so plan your follow-ups.
- Ignoring perfect block 鈥?Timing F within 0.2 seconds of an attack gives you a free stun punish. Master this early.
- Wasting your dash 鈥?Save Q for dodging heavy attacks. It gives i-frames that phase through damage.
- Picking a style randomly 鈥?Try several and find one that fits. Boxing for short, Wrestling for tall.
- Standing still 鈥?Keep moving, reposition often, make yourself harder to hit.
- Overextending stamina 鈥?Never empty your bar. Leave some for emergency dashes and blocks.
- Getting discouraged 鈥?Every loss is experience. The more you practice, the better you become.
